We had another great meal at Farmhouse for our 36th anniversary. On top of some killer Thai dishes, the service issues we encountered on our first visit have been largely resolved, in particular the bar is now synchronized with the rest of the restaurant. So MagoGuide is officially raising Farmhouse’s rating to 4 rostras.
Teote may not be the most authentic take on Venezuelan street food, and there are significant DIY duties expected of the clientele with respect to ordering, securing a table, and bussing one’s leavings, but the food and drinks are very good and the space friendly and welcoming.
Little Bird’s consistently delicious food continues to amaze TeamMago. On our most recent visit we had excellent lamb tartar, the charcuterie board, and cedar plank halibut. Serious yummm.
Tapalaya in Portland’s NE has great food, a funky dining space, live music, a creative boozy drinks plus small well curated tap and wine lists. What’s not to like?
We’ve enjoyed everything about Jam on Hawthorne. The eggs were usually good and the Morningstar vegetarian sausage was a really pleasant surprise, as was the coffee which was especially good. Just like with Stepping Stone Cafe in NW, you’ll have a long wait if you go on the weekend for brunch. But during the week, there is plenty of seating at Jam on Hawthorne for breakfast.
Portland’s Ava Gene’s is a great place to enjoy Italo-PNW inspired cuisine on Portland’s premier restaurant row while the Eternal City sorts out its current crisis driven by the twin scourges of ubiquitous government corruption and metastasizing mass tourism. And in Portland you can dine a fuori without an infinite number of unpleasant encounters with flower sellers and accordion players.
Using our famous walking-around-while-hungry-and-thirsty (WAWHAT) method, we stumbled onto The American Local in Portland’s Richmond district. It was so good that we made our way back there within days to get a second helping. The American Local serves small plates for sharing called New West Drinking Food. Team Mago highly recommends that you give it a try.
We just don’t get it. The Cafe Castagna burger didn’t come close to many of the burgers at some of our other favorite eateries. The pizza was good. The crust was the key, lightly blackened, crisp, and very flavorful. The other ingredients were of good quality and sparingly applied. And yet, and yet… what is the fuss all about?
Farmhouse Kitchen may not be the best Thai restaurant in Portland, but it is great competition for Pok Pok. The Panang Neua (slow braised bone-in beef short rib in a Panang curry served with grilled broccolini, bell pepper, onion, fried Thai basil, and blue rice) proved to be the longest short rib I have ever encountered, and if it is not Chef Saengsawang’s signature dish then it should be. An amazing braise, unctuous and spicy with just a little bit of tooth.
If you love authentic Mexican cuisine, are bored with “Americanized” Tex-Mex, and hate the decor in most “Mexican” restaurants, then Xico is just the place for you.
