Located at Wark on Tyne, about a dozen miles north of the Wall, Battlesteads Hotel & Restaurant proved to be our favorite hotel (as in non-B&B) during the UK portion of our travels.
We enjoyed our stay at the Cnapan Hotel and restaurant in Wales during our 2016 Grand Tour. Judy and Mike Cooper are superb hosts, while Judy is also the chef for Cnapan’s acclaimed restaurant. Sadly, they are no longer serving dinner on a regular basis. But Newport is a nice place to visit and the Cnapan is a nice place to stay while you’re there.
We voted this rental in St. Davids, Wales, one of the best ever. Rent from Matthew James for up to week of walking on one of the greatest coastal trails in the world.
Hotel Le Bleu is a boutique hotel in name only, but it does offer a frugal means of enjoying one of Brooklyn’s nicest neighborhoods. Just don’t drink the coffee or eat the breakfast.
The Archer Hotel has a little too much going on and a few too many floors and (way small) rooms to be considered a genuine boutique hotel, although it certainly makes such claims early and often on its website. If you are riding Amtrak, however, and you have the scratch, it is a nice oasis in the midst of Manhattan. Just be ready for the price.
Located in the former headquarters of a Canadian textile magnate, the eponymous Hotel Gault is an oasis of design and hospitality tucked away on a quiet street in the middle of Montreal’s otherwise thronged and noisy Vieux Montreal district.
We picked the Rosemount B&B in Wexford based on an extensive search through multiple travel sources including The Rough Guide and Booking.com. Most of what we read were glowing reports, so we were excited about our visit. Imagine our disappointment when almost everything about this place was wrong. Read our review to find out what was wrong, how our travel sources failed us, and why we think they were so off the mark.
The Loden Hotel had some good, some bad, and one real ugly. We enjoyed the staff and the room was very nice indeed as was the bar. But the breakfast at the Tableau Bar Bistro sucks, not to put too fine a point on it.
All about our adventures on Hadrian’s Wall in Northern England, with 146 pages and almost 200 photographs, Mago on the Wall is our best travel book ever.
If you are planning a trip to the San Juan Islands, Wildwood Manor is a must stay. Be sure to book early for the well-attended summer season, and if possible splash out for one of the suites. Tell Michael and John that MagoGuide, not TripAdvisor, sent you.
