MagoGuide Map of Portland

We love Portland and it shows in the number of places we’ve visited here in Rose City. All of your favorite MagoGuide Portland restaurants, markets, and sites are listed on the map below. They are also provided in an alphabetical list below the map. And don’t forget to download the MagoGuide Portland Application. It makes getting to all our favorite places even easier!

¿Por Qué No? Taqueria
Despite the fact that tacos are priced from $3.25 to $4.75 (outside of happy hour), the queuing hordes at ¿Por Qué No?? are there for a good quality affordable meal. And compared to the excellent but spendy Mexican cuisine served up at places like Xico they have a point. But that point only goes so far.

Ava Gene’s
It ain't really Roman, but I like it. Ava Gene's is a great place to enjoy Italo-PNW inspired cuisine on Portland's premier restaurant row while the Eternal City sorts out its current crisis driven by the twin scourges of ubiquitous government corruption and metastasizing mass tourism. One of our favorite dishes was that spaghetti all'amatriciana. Another was the bread with lovage butter, porcini, and lemon.

Bollywood Theater
If you like Indian food, but most Indian restaurants leave you non-plussed, then Bollywood Theater is the place for you. Chef Troy MacLarty's two East Portland locations are dedicated to VFM Indian street food. Unless you are a true aficionado of subcontinental cuisine, the menu will be a bit challenging at first. Boxer Ramen on Kearney
The menus is short and sweet, the space clean and utilitarian, and the staff invariably young, friendly, and helpful. Of the four varieties of ramen served at each location, Team Mago recommends spicy red miso (pork broth, pork belly), but the more traditional Tonkotsu Shio has just as much bone broth pigitude without the heat.

Breakside Brewery in NE
Breakside's neo-Norse ale hall in hipster haven Slabtown is geared toward a young and noisy crowd, but none the worst for it. Cafe Castagna
We just don't get it. The Cafe Castagna burger didn't come close to many of the burgers at some of our other favorite eateries. The pizza was good. Chin’s Kitchen
Chin's Kitchen has definite potential in a town that has a surprising scarcity of good Chinese regional cuisine, but for right now Danwei Canting and Kung Pow! blow it away in terms of food, alcohol, service, and location. MagoGuide will be back for more of those killer dumplings and to try the noodle dishes, braised ham hock, and who could resist the pan-fired pork intestines and a beef tripe cold dish (well my wife and most of my friends, but can you imagine a pig guts and duck egg omelette)? But we are really hoping for some important improvements in service and kitchen discipline, so as to reflect WW's culinary experience.

Farmhouse Kitchen
Farmhouse Kitchen may not be the best Thai restaurant in Portland, but it is great competition for Pok Pok. The Panang Neua (slow braised bone-in beef short rib in a Panang curry served with grilled broccolini, bell pepper, onion, fried Thai basil, and blue rice) proved to be the longest short rib I have ever encountered, and if it is not Chef Saengsawang's signature dish then it should be. Kenny and Zukes Bagelworks
We loved everything about Kenny & Zukes Bagelworks in NW Portland. The bagels are baked on the premises and all of the other items on offer are excellent. While we particularly liked the pickled onions that came with the lox and bagel platter, the old school pastrami and chopped liver on rye is the renaissance of a classic that was recently endangered by the closure of NYC's iconic Carnegie Delly, now preserved for Portland fressers at both Kenny & Zukes locations.

Roman Candle Baking Company
The pizza bianca at Roman Candle Baking Co. may not be the equal of that baked at Rome's Forno Campo de’ Fiori, but it is pretty damn close. In fact, Roman Candle is to Italian bread what Ken Forkish and Philippe Garcia are to French baking in Portland--except that the coffee is better at Roman Candle.

Siri Indian Cuisine
Although the onion naan was terrible and the choice of beers on tap limited, Siri did a decent job with their fish tikka and the okra masala where fresh okra made the dish in terms of texture and a subtle, yet still nicely spiced, flavor profile. On the whole, however, there is much better Indian food to be had in Portland, like the Bollywood Theater on Division.
