We had a great time at the Sous Nami Smackdown at St. Jacks. We were rooting for St. Jack’s sous Amanda Williams and she killed the competition. Here are some photos. Keep an eye out for a review of the restaurant/bar St. Jack sometime later this month.
Morgan and I had gotten gotten tickets for the Sous Nami Smackdown at St. Jack. In this “Top Chef” knockoff, three of Portland’s best sous went head-to-head to determine just who is the best. The sous were Amanda Williams from St. Jack, Jeremy Whyte from Oven & Shaker and Tony Wilkie from Racion.
The doors opened at 8:30PM where guests were served two “shift drinks” and an appetizer prepared by each of the contestants. Then at 9:30PM the chefs received two surprise ingredients and created two dishes for the judges and crowd to taste. Valerie from St. Jack described it as a “sort of cocktail party,” so don’t come expecting to eat dinner.
Celebrity judges included:
- Rick Gencarelli, Chef Owner of Grassa and Lardo
- Samantha Bakall, Food & Dining writer for the Oregonian
- Andrew Bohrer, Spirits Director for Vinum Importing & Distribution
- Janis Martin, Chef Owner of Tanuki
Tickets were $20 in advance, $25 at the door.
