Wildwood Manor is a jewel box of a B&B located just ten minutes outside of Friday Harbor on beautiful San Juan Island. The owners Michael Bitterman and John Gallagher are doting hosts, who pamper guests with excellent breakfast fare and concierge-level service. Team Mago arrived three hours before check-in time and had not called ahead, but Michael met us, showed us to our rooms that were already spotless, gave us a tour of the gorgeous Queen Anne-style home where guests are accommodated, told us several amusing renovation horror stories, and then advised us on local restaurants for dinner during our three night stay. After helping us choose our afternoon activities, Michael promised (without any prompting on our part) to call each of our chosen restaurants for reservations while we were out recreating.

The hotel offers guests the choice of three rooms and two suites. All of them are immaculate and provide the traveler superb views, very decent WiFi, and all of the comforts one expects from a high end B&B. The eleven-acre grounds are gorgeous, encompassing a network of strolling paths and a small herd of brown tail deer that Michael feeds twice a day. The public spaces at Wildwood Manor are both artistic and welcoming. The views out of the two story windows toward Orcas Island and the coastal mountains of British Columbia are spectacular.

Guests are pampered with freshly baked cookies and an assortment of packaged snacks, as well as a fridge full of water, juice, and other non-alcoholic drinks. Glasses, plates, etc. are available for picnics on the public veranda or private ones associated with the suites. John and Michael will eagerly give you directions to businesses in Friday Harbor where you can stock a wonderful old-school picnic basket they provide for guests who want to venture beyond the manor for outdoor meals.

You will not want to miss breakfast at Wildwood Manor. The menu changes daily and all three of ours were delicious. Some highlights:

Fruit salad with lemon grass marinade

Fruit salad with lemon grass marinade: sweet and spritely

Orange muffins

Orange muffins: zesty and rich.

Southwestern strata with breakfast link sausages

Southwestern strata with breakfast link sausages: very good, especially when doused with their medium hot salsa. The layered tortillas were a nice touch and since they were corn the dish was gluten free.

Peach blue berry scones

Peach blue berry scones: crunchy, soft, sweet, and fruity.

Eggs in phyllo with tomato dill Havarti

Eggs in phyllo with tomato dill Havarti: nice presentation and very tasty.

Baked blueberry brioche french toastBaked blueberry brioche french toast and chicken apple sausage: decadent, rich, and (kinda) healthy.

If you are planning a trip to the San Juan Islands, Wildwood Manor is a must stay. Be sure to book early for the well-attended summer season, and if possible splash out for one of the suites. Tell Michael and John that MagoGuide, not TripAdvisor, sent you.
